Are you a Trekkie or a Warrie?
Hey, it’s Rich Dale here. Today is May the 4th (be with you), otherwise known as Star Wars Day. The thing is, I’ve never been too much of a Star Wars fan. I was around when the original (episode IV) came out, but I never actually saw it until about 20 years later! The franchise never held much interest for me. I’ve always been more of a Star Trek person. Though I wouldn’t really call myself a Trekkie. I mean, I’ve never been to a convention or anything.
But why do I like Trek better than Wars? It might all come down to simple ego. Star Wars, by its own admission, takes place a long time ago and very far away. What does that have to do with me? Nothing! Star Trek, on the other hand, is my future! It’s the future of Earth, and not that far in the future. Captain Picard could very well be my great great great grandson or something!
Now within the world of Star Trek, probably the one I like least is the original. Really, Captain Kirk? You travel hundreds of light years across the galaxy so you can make out and have fist fights? I guess it was good for its time, but starting with The Next Generation, the plots got a lot more psychological, which was excellent. And it’s got a pretty optimistic view of the future of humanity.
So which side do you fall on? Star Trek, Star Wars, or the rather popular third side — you just think we’re all dorks. Hit me back in the comments!
