Aurora Gets a New Dog

Hi this is Leslie Harris with great news for Aurora. The Aurora Police department is expanding its K-9 unit.

Aurora has had a K-9 unit since 1975, and currently has seven teams of dogs with their handlers, and a sergeant. Each team goes through an intensive 12-week training program with a K-9 trainer, and the teams must recertify every year, as well as participate in weekly training.

When I think of police dogs, I always think of German shepherds, but many other types of dogs are now being utilized.

A $10,000 donation will go to the purchase of a bloodhound to help find missing people, and also to inspect suspicious items. The money will also be used for fitting the police vehicle with a cage, and also to help train the dog.
