Buzz Aldrin is not only smart, he predicted NASA’s future.

If you fancy a film this weekend, you might want to check  out First Man.  A look at the life of the astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969.     I have heard good things and it stars the amazing Claire Foy (aka the Queen in The Crown) as his wife.  (Also check out Nick’s blog on how this film is honoring veterans tomorrow.   https://www.959theriver.com/take-a-vet-to-a-movie-for-free-tomorrow/ )

When I was watching the trailer I couldn’t help but remember a trip I had down to Disney Worlds Tomorrowland where I was lucky enough to meet and interview Buzz Aldrin.

I was a bit of a goofy radio DJ who was a bit of a Scifi geek.  I had interviewed the late James Doohan (Scotty from the original Star Trek) very successfully earlier in the week.  I knew Star Trek very well and was able to talk not only about Scotty’s latest appearance in the Next Generation film but also about the possibility of aliens which was super fun.   So when I interviewed Buzz Aldrin I tried to have the same sort of fun. I really wanted to know what an actual real astronaut thought about aliens, but he was having none of it. Instead he was very intent on talking about the recycling of spaceships.  He totally predicted that NASA would struggle with funding if they kept leaving their billion dollar spaceships up in space and ignored the obvious waste.   He was right and he predicted the insane costs of the space programs would be the downfall of it all.

James Doohan (aka the original Montgomery “Scotty” Scott)

It certainly wasn’t as much fun as talking about aliens but I do remember the conversation quite clearly and I do look forward to seeing the latest film about that amazing first trip to the moon. (Where I bet Buzz Aldrin did see some aliens, he just wouldn’t tell me about them!)
