Carlos Santana Remembers the First Time He Smoked Weed
Believe it or not, Carlos Santana was NOT born with a joint in his hand. In fact, he was kind of a late bloomer.
“I’d been around marijuana all my life since I was a child, but I never toked.”
That changed in the mid-’60s, when the earliest version of his band was coming together. Management was bringing in musicians, but they were all pot smokers.
He told them, quote, “Every time that they smoke weed, they don’t play the same song twice. They play it differently and they forget things. I wish they wouldn’t smoke pot, man. So they could learn the damn song right and play it correctly.”
Well, their solution was NOT to find musicians who didn’t smoke. Instead, they rolled a massive joint and left it there for him, while they went to lunch. And it worked.
Carlos felt the joint BECKONING him. So he finally gave in and smoked it, and it blew his mind. And the rest is history!
