Chicagoland Ranks #2 On List of Metro Areas with Worst Mosquitos

This is the time of the year when everyone gets excited about spending warm evenings outside…until you remember mosquitoes!

But even though mosquitoes are everywhere, some areas are worse than others.

Orkin just posted its 2023 list of the top metro areas for mosquitoes, and Los Angeles is #1 for the THIRD year in a row.

And they didn’t even count the bloodsuckers in the entertainment business…HEY YOOO!

Before that, Atlanta was #1 for SEVEN consecutive years.

Each year, Orkin ranks the top 50 metro areas for mosquitoes by looking at how many people had to use exterminators for treatments over the past 12 months. (If they only look at the total number of treatments done, then yeah…the largest cities will be at the top of the list. Seems odd, but whatever).

The rest of the Top 10 are:  Chicago . . . New York City . . . Atlanta . . . Dallas . . . Washington, D.C. . . . Philadelphia . . . Detroit . . . Houston . . . and Charlotte.

Here’s the full Top 50 list.

They even gives us a handy list of things to prevent bites:

  • Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and long pants.

  • Apply an EPA-registered mosquito repellent containing products such as DEET, picaridin or IR3535.

  • Eliminate standing water in bird feeders, water bowls for pets, potted plants, wading pools and other children’s toys.

  • Regularly clean debris in gutters that provide moisture and harborage.
