Consider Donating Blood This Holiday Season!

As families plan for their winter festivities, schools go on holiday break, and employees take
well-deserved time off, blood donation is not always top of mind. Unfortunately, the need for blood doesn’t take a holiday!

Without lifesaving blood readily available, communities throughout the state could face
a potential crisis as hospitals may not have the blood needed to treat patients.

During this season of giving, remember that the greatest gifts are free. Please consider donating blood. Anywhere you can is great, but I can personally vouch for Versiti Blood Center of Illinois. Versiti Blood Center of Illinois serves patients at more than 85 hospitals in Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana.

Every two seconds someone needs lifesaving blood to survive! it could be someone who has an illness, such as a cancer patient, or someone who has suffered from an accident or injury. It could be someone receiving an organ transplant, a mother giving birth or a young child.

All blood types are needed, with type O positive and O negative most in demand. O positive is the most common blood type, while O negative blood is the universal type that can be received safely by all patients in emergencies when the blood type is unknown.

Donating blood takes about an hour and has the potential to save up to three lives.

If you are looking for a drive, consider the blood drive at the Village Hall in Montgomery. This drive is in honor of a father of two young kids who was diagnosed with cancer this summer. As he has faced this battle and treatment, his family realized how much blood products were keeping him going so they have been determined to raise awareness and blood products in their community. Treatment for cancer doesn’t take a holiday during this time of year…so neither will the blood drive!

Click here to register, or just walk in to the Montgomery Village Hall, 200 N. River Street, between 1pm and 7 pm on Thursday, December 22nd.
