Cousins Ask Utah to Recognize Marriage

Angie and Michael Lee had to leave their state in order to get married! Why? The Utah couple, who made a special trip to Colorado, are first cousins.*cringe*

Angie told Salt Lake City television station KTVX, “We said OK this is crazy but we’re adults now, we’re single now, we’re just going to go for it and who cares what our family thinks.” Utah does allow first cousins to marry but only if they’re 65-years-old or older – or 55 and can prove infertility.

The Lee’s want Utah to change its laws and recognize their marriage. First cousins have a 4-7% chance of having a child with a genetic disorder compared to a 3-4% chance for non-related parents, according to researchers at Columbia University.

Do you believe love is love is love in this circumstance? Is this story now going to make you feel weird the next time you talk to your cousin?
