OK, so with all the different Facebook scandals, Russian Bots, info slips and faux pas I wonder how you feel about using the worlds largest social medium platform. This blog will appear on our web site 959theriver.com and it will also be on several Facebook pages including 95.9 The River, so I guess we’re on board with their antics or at least stuck with em….sorta! Facebook said it could face a fine of up to $5 billion as the result of an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission. The company set aside $3 billion in its quarterly earnings report Wednesday as a contingency against the possible penalty. The one-time charge slashed Facebook’s first-quarter net income considerably, although revenue grew by 25% in the period. The FTC has been looking into whether Facebook broke its own 2011 agreement promising to protect user privacy. The agency has been investigating Facebook for possible privacy violations but has not announced any findings yet. Facebook has had several high-profile privacy lapses in the past couple of years. The FTC has been looking into Facebook’s involvement with the data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica scandal since last March. That company accessed the data of as many as 87 million Facebook users without their consent. Facebook’s monthly user base grew 8% to 2.38 billion. Daily users grew 8% to 1.56 billion. It would seem Facebook is into the self police mode because they’ve really started to crack down and censor posts that feel are racist and or appropriate. The criticisms and the scrutiny are taking a toll on the the free speech platform. I’m not advocating allowing hate filled posts and slanderous opinions, but Facebook might be letting the pendulum swing hard the other way after all their troubles. You still on? How do you feel about freedom of speech vs the right to dignity, decency and privacy?
