Hey it’s Leslie Harris, and on Monday night I attended the opening of How to Catch Creation at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. This is an absolutely wonderful show.

The story opens with Griffin, a 47 year old African American man, telling his best friend Tami (a lesbian) how he has decided that he really wants a child. His biggest obstacle is the fact that he spent 25 years in jail for a crime he did not commit. Tami is brutally honest with Griffin, and the results are hilarious. Griffin remains optimistic and determined.

The show weaves the themes of creation, both biological and artistic, throughout the story, as well as weaving the past with the present. We see the characters creating art, music and writing as their creative forces are awakened.

It’s a bit of a roller coaster ride of emotions, with some moments that are laugh out loud funny, some that are deeply sad, and many are just poignant slices of life as we come to know and care about the six characters. This show is so well-written. I really loved it.
