It’s World Poetry Day. No, Really!

This is Leslie Harris, and today is March 21st, World Poetry Day.

I know I talk about a lot of silly holidays, but this is a real one, declared by none other than the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999, “with the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.”

Poetry can be serious, it can be lovely, or funny,  or whimsical, or downright ridiculous. It’s an opportunity for us to express ourselves, in ways that we normally don’t. It’s also a time to appreciate great poets and poetry.

Some quotes about World poetry day include:

Poetry is a way to explain the inner feelings.

Poetry is the explanation of words.

Poetry comes from the heart.

Who are some of your favorite poets? Have you ever written any poetry? Why don’t you give it a shot today, especially since we’re staying in?

Leave your answers  (and poems) in the comments on the Facebook page!
