The July That Changed Music History
Summer has a lot going for it. School’s out, vacations, parades, fireworks, picnics, swimming, baseball, golf and so much more. Chances are many of your favorite songs were popular during the summer months.
During the summer of 1955 one song changed the course of music history. Although it was not the first rock and roll song, it was the first to become a #1 hit.
The week of July 9th Bill Haley and The Comet’s (We’re Gonna) Rock Around The Clock reached the top spot in Billboard and remained there for 8 weeks.
In 1956, Bill Haley and the Comets starred in the film Rock Around The Clock.
The movie American Graffiti opens with the song and it was also the original opening theme for the TV show Happy Days.
The show was so popular that (We’re Gonna) Rock Around The Clock was re-released in 1974, almost 20 years after the song topped the charts.
