This is such a simple, yet ingenious idea that I’m shocked it doesn’t already exist!

A Pennsylvania teenager has won $25,000 for her ingenious plan to eliminate blind spots on her family’s car.

14-year-old Alaina Gassler developed a webcam-based system that eliminates the blind spot caused by the A-pillar on her family’s Jeep Grand Cherokee.  She says she got the idea after noticing that her mother didn’t like driving the Jeep due to the blind spot.

Gassler’s ingenuity won her a $25,000 prize from the Samueli Foundation’s middle school engineering contest.  And her invention could save lives – more than 840,000 blind spot-related accidents happen each year in the U.S.
