Hard to believe it’s been twenty years since Walter Payton passed at the very young age of 45. It seems like just yesterday we were watching him stiff arm a defender and then run through another on his way to the end zone. I saw Walter play a lot of those home games as a 25 year season ticket holder from 1977 onward. Payton of course the greatest player in Bears history and one of the greatest to ever play in the NFL, but he was much more than that for the city of Chicago. His nickname “Sweetness” was the total opposite of what he was on the football field. Hall of Fame NFL player and coach Mike Ditka described Payton as the greatest football player he had ever seen but even greater as a human being. There was a very fine retrospective in this mornings Trib. by Kori Rumore that brought back many memories and told me some things I forgot and some things I hadn’t known before.
