At first I rolled my eyes when I read that some school districts were assigning “e-learning” days for students on the days that school was called off due to weather, but then when I read more about it… it actually kind of makes sense!
There are three Illinois school districts participating in the e-learning pilot program (West Chicago, Gurnee and Leyden) where teachers put together lessons for students on their snow days. The students then have five days to complete the lesson, so they can do it at their own pace.
So why would anyone want to do school work on snow days??! In addition to keeping kids on top of their work in school, it avoids having your kids (and their teachers) come to school later in the year when the weather is really nice and it’s more difficult to focus!
So far, the pilot program has been a big hit with everyone involved.
The state is still collecting data from all three districts to see if this program should be rolled out statewide.
