Yorkville Chr., Bolingbrook, Glenbard West Hit the Hardwood Looking for Hardware

The boys state basketball tournament starts today down in Champaign, and we have a few suburban schools looking for state titles!

Classes 1A and 2A will play their semifinals and third-place games today, and 3A and 4A will play their semis and third-place games tomorrow. All four state championship games will be played on Saturday.

The first game today features Yorkville Christian, who went 23-13 en route to their first ever state finals appearance. YCHS will take on the Warriors of Steelville (29-6), a town about 60 miles southeast of St. Louis, at 10:00 a.m. today. Even though SHS has a better record than the Mustangs, YCHS is the heavy favorite. Michael O’Brien wrote in the Chicago Tribune today that, “Yorkville Christian may be the biggest favorite in any class in the history of the IHSA state tournament.” Quite the endorsement!

If YC can make good on that prediction today, they’ll play the winner of Liberty and Scales Mound in the title game on Saturday.

The two 2A semifinals today pits Taylor Ridge and Monticello at 2:30 and DePaul College Prep vs. Nashville at 4:00.

The 1A and 2A third-place games will start tonight at 7:00 and 8:30 respectively.

Class 3A also has four schools outside our listening area competing in their semifinals tomorrow. Chicago’s St. Ignatius will battle Springfield’s Sacred Heart Griffin in a battle of parochial schools. The winner will face either Simeon or Metamora for the state title.

Two local teams will face off in one of the class 4A semis tomorrow! Lombard’s Glenbard West and Bolingbrook will tip off at 4:00 Friday afternoon. You can listen to that game live on our sister station 1340 WJOL. The winner will take on either Whitney Young or Barrington, who play in the game prior.

The 3A and 4A third place games start Friday night at 7:00 and 8:30 respectively.
