It’s not typically breaking news when PETA sends a letter to an elected official, but I actually agree with them on this one!

Remember last week when a truck pulling a trailer full of cows crashed? A handful of cows got loose on I-80 down by Joliet, and local farmers had to come in on horseback to corral them?

No humans died in the accident, but eight cows were killed. Two of them were injured and were shot dead by first responders!

The driver of that truck was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper traffic lane usage in connection. Joe Hosey wrote in the Herald News today that PETA wrote a letter to Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow pushing for adding charges of animal cruelty to the list! I have to be honest, I’m kinda with that idea!

If a guy is going to be hauling animals – even if they are on their way to a slaughterhouse – and he drives under the influence, he should be responsible for anything that causes them harm. Seems fair to me!

PETA isn’t going to let this marketing opportunity go to waste! If you drive on I-80 through Joliet…keep an eye for a new billboard pushing veganism, compliments of PETA.
