R.I.P. Captain Stubing

Actor Gavin MacLeod has sadly passed away on Saturday.  He was 90 years old.

Actually, my favorite role of his was the kind but sometimes snarky Murray Slaughter on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”.  That show was on during my entire teenage years and I was a faithful watcher.  But I figured the captain of the Love Boat was a character more people would recognize.

Though his best known roles are Murray and Captain Stubing, he also was a regular on “McHale’s Navy”, and had many character roles in several other TV shows and movies.

His Mary Tyler Moore co-star Ed Asner posted a touching message about him on Twitter. He wrote, “My heart is broken. Gavin was my brother, my partner in crime (and food) and my comic conspirator. I will see you in a bit Gavin. Tell the gang I will see them in a bit. Betty! It’s just you and me now.”  Asner and Betty White are the last survivors of the Mary Tyler Moore cast.

Gavin will be missed — by me and millions of others.
