AAA Expects Thanksgiving Travel to Be Nuts This Year

Triple-A put out its annual travel report for Thanksgiving, and it looks like clear roads ahead!  Just kidding . . . you’re screwed.

Triple-A expects 55.4 MILLION people to travel for Thanksgiving this year.  That’s the third most since 2000, and a 2.3% increase over last year.

More than 49 million of those people will drive . . . 4.7 million will fly . . . and 1.6 million will get where they’re going some other way, like busses and trains.  (That’s roughly 2% more cars on the road and 7% more people in the air.)

So what are the BEST days to leave town?  Unless you’re taking off four or five days early, they all suck.  But next Tuesday and Wednesday are the worst overall.  And Sunday is the worst day to head home.

No matter the day, you might hit less traffic if you leave before 10:00 A.M., or after 7:00 P.M.  The WORST time to drive is between 2:00 and 6:00 the day before Thanksgiving.  You’ll hit 11% more traffic than normal on the road then.

One piece of good news from the report:  Gas might be a little cheaper this time.  The national average last Thanksgiving was $3.58.  It’s currently around $3.35 and trending down.
