It typically grows in shallow, stagnant fresh water, and if it starts to grow rapidly, or “bloom”, it could be mildly dangerous to humans and could kill dogs.
This summer the algae was found in a lake in Lake in the Hills. A pond in a dog park in St. Charles was infested with it two years ago.
It is very real!
