It was 40 years ago that Jane Byrne was elected Mayor of Chicago. She was the first woman to hold the title in the Windy City and served one term (1979-1983).
Every Chicago Mayor since then has been a man. Of course, that will change next month, when Lori Lightfoot assumes the office.
However, the election of a female mayor is not a recent occurrence.
On April 4th, 1887 Susan Salter was elected Mayor of Argonia, Kansas. She was the very first female mayor of an American town.
